Obituary for Mary Catherine Townsend

Calais – Mary Catherine Townsend, 89, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at Calais Regional Hospital. Mary was born in Westville, NS on May 18, 1926, daughter of the late John and Jessie (Heighton) O’Brien. During the war years Mary worked at several restaurants and at a war plant in Ontario. Following the war she relocated to Milltown, NB to work in the local cotton mill. While there, Mary met her one true love, David Leland Townsend. They were married on November 7, 1957. Eventually Mary left the cotton mill to raise her children. She was a Communicant of St. Stephen’s R.C. Church in Milltown, NB, and enjoyed flowers, gardening, cooking, fishing and hunting.

In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by three sisters, Jessie Anderson, Henrietta “Hank” Brown, and Anna May Brown; and a brother John O’Brien. Surviving are her loving husband of 57 years, David L. Townsend of Calais; five children, David Townsend and wife Marjorie of Calais, Debbie Townsend of Calais, Diane Munroe and husband George of St. Stephen, NB, Daphne Boles and companion Larry of St. Stephen, NB, and Darin Townsend of Calais; five grandchildren, Heather, Mary, Jodi, David, and George; five great-grandchildren, Lydia, Shawn, Christopher, Brody, and Bryson; two children whom she considered her grandchildren, Melissa and Joey; two sisters, Dorothy MacKay and husband John of Dartmouth, NS, and Fran Gray of Dartmouth, NS; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private burial will take place in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens in Nova Scotia. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
