Sipayik – Matilda Paula Maher, 63, died peacefully at her home on Friday, June 22, 2007, with her family by her side. Matilda was born in Pleasant Point, August 16, 1943, daughter of the late Edward and Florence (Neptune) Bassett. She was employed as an Assembler for General Motors in Framingham, Mass. and Baltimore, MD for over 30 years. Matilda was a proud member of the Passamaquoddy Tribe. She was a member of Save Passamaquoddy Bay, various softball and bowling leagues in Mass., and the United Auto Workers Assoc. Matilda enjoyed Native American bead work, various crafts, and spending time with her family. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Hazel Dana, and four brothers, Edward R., Daniel, Victor, and Louis Bassett. Surviving are her four children, Caroline Maher of Pleasant Point, Linda Hallett and husband Richard of Franklin, MA., Ronald Maher and wife Kristen and Paul Maher, both of Blackstone, MA., and John Maher of Franklin, MA.; four sisters, Pauline Gabriel, Mary Bassett, Joan Barnes and Elaine Wiatrak; two brothers, Francis and Earl Bassett; eight grandchildren, Derek Dobachesky, Ryan Maher, Sean Maher, Ashton O’Reilly, Emily Hallett, Richard Hallett, Ryan P. Maher, and Phillip Maher; and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call starting 1 p.m. Saturday until 9 a.m. Monday, June 25 at the Elder’s Meal Site on Elders Way, Pleasant Point. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Eugene Gaffey, 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ann Church, Pleasant Point. Burial will follow in the Tribal Cemetery.
