Calais – Max V. Gayton Sr., 93, passed away on Friday, February 27, 2009 at Atlantic Rehab & Nursing Center. Max was born in Calais on December 16, 1915, son of the late James and Lillian (Vincent) Gayton. He attended Calais area schools and started working in the woods. On January 18, 1941, Max entered the U.S. Army, serving his country during WWII with Co. F 378th Infantry. After the war, Max returned home and married Frances Greenlaw on January 5, 1946. He worked for Dicenzo’s Construction and later as a union laborer until his retirement. Max enjoyed puttering, gardening, reading and spending time with his family. Besides his parents, Max was predeceased by his sisters and brothers. Surviving are his loving wife of 63 years, Frances Gayton; two sons, Max Gayton II and his wife Gloria of Calais, and Richard Gayton and his wife Alane of Baileyville; a daughter, Linda McCoubrey and her husband Charles of Calais; three granddaughters, Tammy Gayton of Calais, Christine McCoubrey of Calais, and Keely Gayton of Baileyville; and three great-grandchildren, Dominic Gayton, Kaisha Gayton and Lily McCoubrey.
