Obituary for Maxwell Joseph Barnes

Pleasant Point – Maxwell “Chick” Barnes, 73, passed away Friday, May 18, 2012 at a Bangor hospital with his loving family by his side. Chick was born in Pleasant Point on May 21, 1938, the eldest child of Maxwell and Angela (Francis) Barnes. After attending school in Pleasant Point, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. Chick returned home for a year and then enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving with the 101st Airborne Division. Following the Army, he once again returned home to Pleasant Point and married Mary Morrison on December 23, 1967. Chick worked various jobs, including being a basket maker for many years until he was hired as Fire Chief with the Pleasant Point Fire Department. He retired in 2009 with 37 years of service. Chick was a member of Fred Mitchell Post #11 American Legion in Eastport and the Ralph A. Ray Post #558 V.F.W. in Eastport. He served for several years as a Pleasant Point Council Member and also with the Natural Resource Committee and the Census Committee. Chick was a coach player for the Passamaquoddy team with the Quoddy Men’s League, as well as coaching the Pony League and Little League at Pleasant Point. His passion was hunting with his many buddies and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. Chick was a proud friend of Bill W. for 26 years. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son James Barnes. Surviving are his loving wife 44 years Mary Barnes; eight children, Joseph Barnes and his wife Dorothy, Lisa DeMolet and her husband Tim, Amy Barnes and her companion Moey Leighton, David Barnes and his companion Jennifer Lewey, Brenda Voisine and her husband Eric, Walter Sockabasin, Sabrina Sockabasin and Darren Paul and his wife Donna; five sisters, Delia Trott, Sylvia Corson and her husband John, Sandra Murphy and her husband Chuck, Frances LaCoute and Angela McPhail; six brothers, Billy Barnes and his wife Dawn, Eddie Barnes and his wife Blanche, Jimmy Barnes and his wife Barbara, Sam Barnes and his wife Nancy, Jerry Barnes and his wife Cortina, and Tony LaCoute and his wife Shirley; 20 amazing grandchildren whom he loved and adored, Chelsea, Cassie, Destinee, Joseph Jr., Timmy, Jenna, Riley, Skilah, Jaylah, Davin, Abby, Keisha, Karina, Walter Jr., Diora, Arthur, Zabaya, Andre, Kristin and Jacob; and a great-grand daughter Tanisha. Visiting hours will be held at Chick’s home at 9 Moosewalk Lane, Pleasant Point until 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, 2012. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. James Plourde 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ann’s R.C. Church, Pleasant Point. Burial with military honors will follow in Restlawn Cemetery, Perry. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
