Maynard Clark Morrison, 79, died September 6, 2015, at his home in Perry, surrounded by his family, just four days after the passing of his beloved wife Rita. He was born in Perry on November 11, 1935, the son of Colon S. and Martha (Clark) Morrison.
He attended the red brick schoolhouse on Shore Road in Perry, and graduated from Shead Memorial High School in 1953. He was a First Class Boatswain’s Mate in the U.S. Coast Guard stationed in Southwest Harbor. He served on buoy tenders, tugboats, and as a lighthouse keeper at several locations on the Maine coast.
He married Rita J. Morgan, of Pembroke, on December 13, 1958, and they raised their children at the family home on the Shore Road in Perry. Maynard was a commercial fisherman, coming from a long line of men who made their living from the sea. He was a Perry Shore lobsterman and weir fisherman, scallop dragged and shrimped in the winter, but spent most of his life fishing herring, something he had done since childhood. Captain Morrison owned and captained many boats over the years, including the sardine carrier "Paul Frederick" and the "Chester T. Marshall", a boat he converted to a purse seiner he fished with off Gloucester and the Grand Banks. He was an avid pilot who loved to spot fish flying his Cessna 172 and Taylor craft airplanes. Maynard was civic minded, and served as a member of the Perry Volunteer Fire Department, the Perry Planning Board, Perry School Committee, Deacon of the Perry Congregational Church, and was President of the Restlawn Cemetery Association.
Maynard is survived by his son Gerald S. Morrison and his wife Sarah of Perry, daughters Wendy L. Morrison of Dickinson, Texas, and Gale M. Morrison of Perry, and his three very special grandsons, Nathaniel, Bradley and Benjamin Morrison, all of Sebago.
Maynard is also survived by a sister Evelyn Morrison Brower and her husband George of Southbury, Connecticut, a brother Eldon Morrison and his wife Dianne of Yarmouth, a brother-in-law Frank Morgan and his wife Judith of Brewer, sister-in-law Jane Morgan of Pembroke, brother-in-law Wayne Treagy of Hampden, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, Maynard was predeceased by his older brother Colon Morrison, Jr., and his granddaughter Martha Kristina Morrison.
He had immense appreciation for his caregivers, Mindy Brown, Brenda Ritchie Rockwell, Brenda Ashby McGuire, and Sandra Pottle of Downeast Hospice.
Visiting hours for Maynard and Rita will be held 5:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, September 10, 2015 at May’s Funeral Home - Flagg Chapel, 72 High Street, Eastport. A celebration of life will be held 1:00 p.m., Friday, September 11th at Perry Congregational Church, Shore Road, Perry, with Tessa Chaffey Ftorek officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn Cemetery, in Perry.
