Merle “Moe” Loren Raye, 93, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, peacefully departed this life surrounded by his loving family. Born on November 12, 1930, Merle graduated from Vanceboro High School, Class of 1949. His strong work ethic led him to a 40+ year career working with the railroad. This journey began with the Maine Central Railroad, eventually leading him to serve as a track foreman with Canadian Atlantic, culminating in a well-respected retirement from Canadian Pacific Railway in 1992.
On April 21, 1955, Merle united in marriage with his beloved Helen Marie Anderson, embarking on a lifelong partnership filled with love and devotion. Together, they nurtured a family that became the center of Merle’s world.
A true lover of nature, Merle found immeasurable joy at his camp on Spednic Lake, where he embraced the tranquility of the outdoors, reveled in watching wildlife, and enjoyed boating. He was an avid Red Sox fan and watched every game…sometimes twice!
In addition to his many interests, Merle possessed a unique talent for poetry. He dedicated his pen to capturing the essence of life’s special moments, crafting verses that celebrated the milestones of cherished friends and family.
Above all, it was family that remained paramount in Merle’s life. His heart swelled with pride and joy during gatherings, particularly those spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whose laughter and love he treasured deeply.
In addition to his parents Aubrey and Sadie Raye, Merle was predeceased by his beloved wife Helen Raye; a brother Clifford Raye; and a sister Faye Freeman. Surviving are his three children, Don Raye and wife Joanne of St. Stephen, NB, Joy Leech and husband Charlie of Saint John, NB, and Cindy Pickering and husband Thomas of Lee; seven grandchildren, Nathan Leech, Dustin Pickering, Patrick Leech, Stephen Raye, Shelby Bradford, Drew Pickering, and David Raye; twelve great-grandchildren; and a brother Max Raye and wife Cynthia of Bangor.
