Obituary for Muriel Flagg Deshon

Perry – Muriel (McLellan) Flagg DeShon, 90, passed away Tuesday, December 06, 2011 at her home in Perry. Muriel was born at Welshpool, Campobello Island on May 18, 1921, the daughter of the late Silas and Louise (Calder) McLellan. Mrs. DeShon was a graduate of Shead Memorial High School, received her Bachelor’s degree from Colby College, and a Master’s degree from the University of Maine. Muriel also did graduate work at Husson and the University of New Hampshire. Mrs. DeShon was a secondary teacher for 37 years in Eastport and Calais. Her associations include Chi Omega Sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma Society where she served as President, Commissioner of the Maine State Museum, Maine Retired Teacher’s Association where she served as recording secretary, Maine Association of Retirees, Board member of the Border Historical Society, St. Croix International Garden Club, and Literary Round Table where she served as President and recording secretary. In 1950, Muriel married Philip Q. Flagg, whom died in 1984. In 1988 she married Howard C. DeShon, whom died in 2007. Surviving are many nieces, nephews, cousins, and her caretakers, Judy Kierstead, Rhonda Kierstead, Melinda Johnston and Sally Doten. Visiting hours will be held 12 – 2 p.m. Saturday, December 10, 2011 at Mays Funeral Home – Flagg Chapel, 72 High St., Eastport. A celebration of Muriel’s life will begin 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Eastport. Donations in Muriel’s memory may be made to P.A.W.S. Humane Society, PO Box 182, Calais, ME 04619, or the St. Anne’s Anglican Church, 92 North Rd., Welshpool, NB E5E 1C3.
