Obituary for Muriel Mae Doten (Gustaveson)

Baring Plt. - Muriel Doten went to be with her Lord January 15,2016. She was born on September 10, 1921 in Manitowoc, WI to Norman and Mabel (Andersen) Gustaveson.

After high school graduation Muriel went into nursing school at Norwegian American Hospital in Chicago and graduated in 1942. In February 1943 she joined the Army Nurses Core and was stationed at the 220th Station Hospital at Fort Jackson, S.C. In July she traveled by troop train across the country to San Bernadina, CA where she met Clyde, who was also in the Army.

On May 12, 1944 Clyde and Muriel were married in Wisconsin at Muriel's home church. Shortly after their marriage their unit broke up and they were separated for 21 months. The nurses joined the 228th General Hospital and were sent to England. The European War was over in May 1945 and Muriel returned home in November 1945. She was discharged from the Army in Jan. 1946 with the rank of 1st Lt. She and Clyde came to Baring, ME on March 19, 1946 where they lived together for 57 1/2 years.

Muriel worked many years at the Calais Regional Hospital but was also busy with Sunday School, church, family, nursing, and community activities. The town people always called her for "medical" advice. She was always ready and willing to help anyone who had needs because she was a very giving and caring person. She loved her family unconditionally and also her Second Baptist Church family.

Muriel was predeceased by her parents, husband, a brother, a sister, an infant daughter, 9 sisters-in-law, & 11 brothers-in-law, several nieces and nephews.

Muriel is survived by her sister Laverne Mathison of CA, her 3 children: Clyde Jr. & his wife Gail of Calais, Mary McLellan & her husband Douglas of Baring, and Diane Peek of TX, a brother-in-law George Moreshead of Calais, a sister-in-law Evelyn Johnson of Calais, a sister-in-law Roslie Gustaveson of CO, 6 grandchildren: Laurie, David, Duane, W.C., Mary Kay, & Merete (our Norwegian student), 10 great grandchildren: Ethan, Abby, Kyndra, Madison, Austin, Casey, Sidney, & Maja, Alva, & Tuva (in Norway), many dear nieces and nephews from all over the country.

Visiting hours will be held 10 – 11 a.m. Thursday, January 21, 2016 at the Second Baptist Church, Church St., Calais, where a Celebration of Muriel’s life will begin 11 a.m. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
