Edmunds TWP- Norma L. Cox, 80, passed away on December 25th, surrounded by her family at her home. Norma was born on February 18, 1935 in Machias, Maine to Norman and Elsie Crosby. After graduating from Dennysville High School, she married her high school love, Samuel Cox, and they moved to Southern Maine for the years Sam was in the Coast Guard, raising their family of six children: Jeanne, Dennis, Stephen, Debbie, Paul, and Trudy. While living there she made many close friends in the Dry Mills community and even after returning to Edmunds, this group remained close. Norma loved her family immensely and throughout the years fostered many family traditions- such as huge family dinners on holidays such as Easter and Thanksgiving, the annual fishing derby, and the Christmas Eve gathering at her and Sam’s home.
After her children were grown, Norma especially loved planning, planting, and tending her many beautiful flower gardens around her home. It made her very happy to have many of the grandchildren choose her yard as the setting for their weddings, or to take special photos. Throughout the years, her greatest joy certainly was her family. She was very proud of her six children, and to have 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren who surrounded her with love, and enjoyed every opportunity to spend time with them. She was always eager to go with any of them, be it to a ball game, play, concert, or even on one of her many adventures traveling to places both far and near- she loved time spent with them no matter the location. Her greatest pride was that she had raised such a caring family who supported her, and each other, through life’s greatest trials. When not spending time with family, she also enjoyed attending Bingo weekly, and the friends she spent time with there.
In addition to her parents, Norma was predeceased by her loving husband of 56 years, Samuel Cox; her son, Dennis Cox; grandson, Steve Seavey, and great-granddaughter, Jennifer Cox; her sister, Ruth Hallowell; brother, Charles (Knuck) Crosby; and brother-in-law, Fred Allen. Surviving are her children, Jeanne Seavey, Stephen Cox and his wife Cindy, Deborah Leighton and her husband Glenn, Paul Cox, Trudy Newcomb and her husband Randy, and daughter-in-law, Brenda Cox; her beloved 13 grandchildren (Sammy, Jason, Chris, Angela, Amy, Adam, Brittany, Erin, Eric, Jodi, Brandon, Vicki, and Stephen) and 19 great-grandchildren (Gage, Austin, Sean, Macy, Wyatt, Kelly, Samantha, Kaci, Dustin, Amaya, Christian, Cruz, Willow, Lauryn, Tori, Braelyn, John, Ethan, and Corey); her sister, Constance Allen, sister-in-in law, Beverly Crosby, and Brother-in-law, Herbert Hallowell; special friends, Shirley and Richard Reid, Jan Phinney, Carolyn Cox, and Allan, Shelley, and Shelby Seavey.
A celebration of Norma’s life will be held 3 p.m. Friday, January 1, 2016 at the Dennysville Congregational Church, 115 King St., Dennysville, with Roy Kilby officiating. A burial will follow in the Dennysville Cemetery. After the committal service, family and friends are invited to a gathering at the Parish Hall. Donations in Norma’s memory can be made to the Dennys River Ambulance Service, 58 King St. Dennysville, ME 04628. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
