Obituary for Norman Leroy Young

East Machias– Norman Leroy Young, 85, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2016 at the Maine Veteran’s Home of Bangor. Norman was born in Calais on September 18, 1930, and was raised in Eastport by his great grandmother Ella Young and after she passed; by his great-aunt and great-uncle Ethel and Norris Whelpley. He graduated from Shead Memorial High School, Class of 1949. Following high school, Norman enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and returned home on leave in August, 1951, to marry his childhood sweetheart, Dorothy Townsend. While serving in the Marines, Norman was a supply officer and served during the Korean War, Cuban Missile Crisis, and two tours in Vietnam. He retired as a Major in 1970 after 21 years of faithful service.

Upon his retirement, he moved back to Maine where he started his own boat building business, and later worked as a clerk of the works for a variety of architects on many large scale school projects throughout the state. He was a member of the V.F.W. in Eastport and served as a city Councilman in Eastport.

In addition to his great grandmother, great aunt and uncle and his beloved wife Dorothy, Norman was predeceased by sisters-in-law Ruby, Florence “Blondie”, Mary, Pansy, Connie and Patty; and brothers-in-law Rod, Wally and Arthur. Surviving are his two sons, Michael Young and wife Sally of Williston, FL, and Larry Young and wife Rose of Kennebunk; two daughters, Karen Hallowell and husband Keith of Edmunds, and Lois Young of Dennysville; eleven grandchildren, Jessica, Jennifer, Amber, Julie, Laura, Rob, Brian, Mark, Sydney, Hayley and Grace; 22 great-grandchildren; sister Marie of Eddington; sister-in-law Alice of MA; brother-in-law Joe of FL; Ralph of MA; and Charles of Charlotte and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Norman’s life will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, May 15, 2016 at Mays Funeral Home – Flagg Chapel, 72 High St., Eastport. Burial with military honors will follow in Hillside Cemetery.
