Waite and Township 21 – On Thursday, January 29, 2009, Orland N. Dwelley, 70, passed away at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with his loving wife beside him. Orland was born in Princeton on December 7, 1938, son of the late Arnold and Elizabeth (Neale) Dwelley. He was educated in Princeton schools but quit before he graduated high school to start his own logging business. Orland started with a chain saw, a pulp hook, a truck, and a horse named Peter. He worked hard, long hours seven days a week building his business and when his son, Russell, joined him it then became Orland Dwelley & Son, Inc. Orland started in the logging business when he was seventeen years old and fifty-three years later on January 29, 2009, at the age of seventy, he left it. Orland had the plowing and sanding contracts for the towns of Waite and Talmadge for over forty years and he could be counted on the make sure the roads were passable and safe. In his younger years he enjoyed going duck hunting in Canada with his friends. He liked to hunt and he loved his pontoon boat, but his greatest pleasure was spending time with his family and friends joking and telling stories. And he had a lot of stories to tell. Orland was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Master in Lewy’s Island Lodge #138 A.F. & A.M. on April 28, 1965, served as Master of the lodge in 1979, and was a member for forty years. He also was a member of the Anah Temple Shrine in Bangor. He was a member of the Princeton Rod & Gun Club almost from the beginning and a member of the Professional Loggers Council. Orland was a past member of the Town of Waite School Board. He joined the Maine Army National Guard where he served for many years. One of his favorite duties was chauffeuring Senator Ed Muskie and Senator Margaret Chase Smith around the state. Orland was a good, hardworking, honest and loving man and he will be greatly missed. He was predeceased by his parents; his maternal grandparents, Raleigh and Marjorie Neale; his paternal grandparents, Jack and Maude Dwelley; a cousin, Peter Neale; a cousin Andrea Burke; and several aunts and uncles. Orland is survived by his wife of eleven years, Jeanette (Kneeland) Dwelley of Township 21; a daughter, Beth Dwelley of Waite; a son, Russell Dwelley and his companion Wendy Ramsdell of Waite; a grandson, Chad Dwelley and his fiancé Katie of Bangor; a granddaughter, Raynel Dwelley of Machias; a great-granddaughter, Reagan Dwelley of Bangor; an aunt, Florence Rioux of Princeton; an uncle, Richard Neale and his wife Marjorie of Ellsworth; the mother of his children, Helen Dwelley of Grand Lake Stream; two stepsons, John McGovern and his wife Jo-Anne of Baileyville, and Michael McGovern and his wife Jennifer of Eddington; three step-granddaughters, Chelsey and Marissa McGovern of Baileyville, and Chloe Schaeffer-Phelan of Eddington; two step-grandsons, Michael J. and Joshua McGovern of Eddington; many special and loved cousins and many, many good and dear friends. He will be especially missed by his black Lab companion, Bubba. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
