Patrick Louis “Bugsy” Newell, 55, passed away Friday, November 10, 2023, at his father’s home in Princeton surrounded by family. Bugsy was born in Calais on April 25, 1968, son of Robert Newell Sr. and Margaret (Mitchell) Newell.
After attending Calais High School, Bugsy graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy and became a police officer for the Pleasant Point Police Department. He later worked as a timber harvester and most recently as a plumber. Bugsy was a kid at heart and loved being around children. He was commonly referred to as “Uncle Buggy” by the local children. Bugsy enjoyed riding his four-wheeler.
Bugsy was predeceased by his mother, Margaret Rose Newell; grandparents Bertha Mitchell, and Lewey and Irene Dana; sister Kateri Longfellow; and aunts and uncles, Clifford Mitchell, Kenneth Newell Sr., Martha Barstis, Molly Parker, Eleanor Mitchell, and Phyllis Saunders. Surviving are his father, Robert Newell Sr. and companion Carol Francis; children Glen Tomah, Vince Lewey, Christopher Newell and companion Nipon Sabattus, Franklin Grant, and Kendra Stevens; sister Veronica Newell; brothers, Robert Newell Jr., Stephen Newell and companion Maria Girouard, Roger “A Bomb” Newell and wife Susanne Soctomah, Edmund Tomah and wife Tonya, Aaron Frey and wife Becky, Eric Newell and companion Erica Shain, Joseph “Toast” Mitchell and companion Alberta Lewey, and Adam Moore and wife Christy; special “sisters” and “brother”, Betty Francis, Alicia, Cassandra, Angela, and Eyan; special Godmother Veronica Moore and companion Gary; nieces and nephews, Amanda and companion Derick, Tabby, Brigette, Stephen “Stove”, Thomas, Samuel, Tarryn, Heidi, Sadie, Kiona, Naomi, Xavier, Little Eric, Talynn, Joseph, Jenna, Kellen, and Abei; special friend Patrick Francis; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visitation will begin 5 p.m. Monday, November 13, 2023, at the home of Amanda Newell, 3 Treatment Plant Rd., Pleasant Point, until 12 noon Wednesday, November 15. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Roland Berngeh 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 15, at St. Joseph Church, 51 Washington St., Eastport.
