Calais – Patty Jean Hayward, 83, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2013 at Calais Regional Hospital. Patty was born in Marine City, MI, on February 25, 1930, daughter to Henry and Blanche (Howland) Hayward. After graduating from Calais Memorial High School, Patty enlisted into the Women’s Army Corps in 1951. She served as a secretary for five different Generals, including General Westmoreland in Vietnam. She also served time in Germany and Hawaii. During her Army career she earned many awards including the Meritorious Service Medal, two Joint Services Commendation Medals, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross. Between enlistments Patty worked as a court recorder in Virginia. After serving her country for over 23 years, Patty retired in 1976 and returned home to Calais. She was a member of the Women’s Army Corps Veterans’ Association, Sherman Bros. Post #3 American Legion in Calais, and the Boyd-Smith Post #9779 V.F.W. in Calais. Patty enjoyed making picture collages and spending quality time with her family. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by five brothers, Hazen, Clint, Sam, Jon, and infant Jon Hayward; and three sisters, Corliss Keef, Jeri Mae McCoy, and Marion “Sissy” Johnson. Surviving are two sisters, Sara Cameron of Calais, and Ann Hacker and her husband Kenneth of Ottawa, Ontario; her “nephew” and caregiver Jesse Pottle of Calais; her faithful canine companion Sissy-Girl; and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of Patty’s life will be held 12:30 p.m. Sunday, June 2, 2013 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. Burial with military honors will follow in Baring Cemetery.
