Calais – Paul Lyman McMillan, 86, passed away Tuesday, February 08, 2011 at Calais Regional Hospital. Paul was born in St. Stephen, N.B., on October 23, 1924, son of the late Walter and Helen (Lee) McMillan. After graduating from Calais Academy, he worked for Unobsky’s Stores in Lubec and Calais. Paul enlisted into the US Army to serve his country during the Korean War. He served with the 116th Engineer Combat Battalion and earned the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, as well as the UN Service Medal. Following the war Paul returned home and worked for St. Croix Paper Company and Georgia Pacific. Shortly after Paul and his wife purchased the Barlow House Motel on Maine Street in Calais. He then became Assistant Manager for the State of Maine Liquor Store in Calais, as well as helping in the Woodland Store. Paul was a member of William T. Wren Post #23 American Legion in Baileyville, and was a former member of Frontier Lodge #111 Odd Fellows and Lewey’s Island Lodge #138 A.F. & A.M. He enjoyed reading, traveling, puttering around the house, and caring for dogs. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Jack; good friend Francis Reid; and many of his canine companions, including his most beloved friend, Corky. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Betty (Rutherford) McMillan; sister-in-law Mary Jane Carroll of Holden, MA; four nephews, Thomas Jack and his wife Shirley of Clayton, NC, Paul Jack of Baileyville, Brian Carroll and his wife Liesel of Franklin, MA, and Christopher Carroll and his wife Dietra of Acton, MA; ten grand nieces and grand nephews; and his faithful canine companion, Buckwheat. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, February 11, 2011 at Calais Cemetery. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
