Baring Plantation – Pauline Muriel Mahar, 73, passed away following a courageous battle with cancer Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Calais Regional Hospital with her family by her side. Pauline was born in Calais on November 15, 1940, daughter of the late Paul and Doris (Hickey) Spinney. On November 11, 1957, Pauline married Lawrence “Larry” Mahar in St. Stephen, NB. She worked for many years for W.T. Grant Co., Kelly’s Apparel, and Calais Regional Hospital. One of her greatest accomplishments was running Thunderwing Kennels in Baring where she made many friends in her dog grooming business from which she retired after 25 years. Pauline was a life member of Calais Rod & Gun Club, Northeast Grouse Field Trail Assoc., and the National Ruffed Grouse Assoc.
Pauline is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Lawrence “Larry” Mahar; three children, Jerry Mahar and wife Cheryl of Robbinston, Ronnie Mahar and wife Sue of Baileyville, and Laurie Clark and husband Gene of South Princeton; six grandchildren, Julie Myers and husband Chris of Orono, Kacey Hutchins and husband Ronnie of Bucksport, Kylie James and husband Matt of Rochester, NH, Kelsy Snowman and companion Jesse of Bangor, Jeremy Clark and wife Megan of South Princeton, and Gena Maloney and husband Benjamin of Calais; four great-grandchildren, Maddison Clark, Parker Hutchins, and Londyn and Sawyer James; brother Paul Spinney of Kenduskeag; sister Barbara McLellan and husband Allen of Alexander; sister-in-law Jo Anne Spinney of Calais; brothers-in-law David Mahar of Calais, and Carl Mahar and wife Natalie of Calais; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2014 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A celebration of Pauline’s life will be held in the funeral home 1 p.m. Saturday, April 5. A spring burial will take place in Baring Cemetery.
