Grand Lake Stream – Peter Robert Yates “Papa”, 64, passed away after a brief illness on January 5, 2016 at a Bangor hospital surrounded by his family. Peter was born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick on May 11, 1951 to Carleton and Shirley (Dow) Yates. He spent his childhood and attended grade school in Grand Lake Stream before graduating from Woodland High School in 1969. He then went on to attend nursing school in Presque Isle, the only male graduate of his class. Nursing was Peter’s passion for the next 42 years, spending his entire career at Calais Regional Hospital where he cared for a countless number of the members of his community. Peter was active with the Anah Shriners for many years, he loved hunting, fishing and just spending time outdoors in Grand Lake Stream. Peter’s heart was in Grand Lake Stream, he cherished every minute spent there almost as much as he cherished his family. He touched the lives of all who knew him. In addition to his parents Peter was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Peter Mercier. He is survived by his twin sister, Pamela Mercier of Baileyville; brother, David Brown of Arkansas; niece, Holly Adams and her husband, Elson of Baileyville; nephew, Donny Mercier and his wife Kacy of Howland; two great nephews, Andrew Leighton and Aiden Adams; his great niece and little princess, Anna Mercier; many friends and his extended hospital family that is too great to name individually. Visitation will be held, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 15th at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais where a memorial service will begin at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 16th.
