Calais – Philip Leo Hollingdale Jr., 81, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Monday, January 31, 2011. Philip was born in St. Stephen, NB, on May 12, 1929, son of the late Philip Hollingdale Sr. and Veronica (Murphy) Hollingdale. He graduated from Calais Memorial High School, Class of 1948. Philip worked for A&P in Calais until he entered the U.S. Navy. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served on the USS Cadmus and USS Edisto. After the war he returned home and met the love of his life, Gloria Donahue, whom he married on April 7, 1956. Philip worked as a sales representative for National Biscuit Company, currently known as Nabisco, for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing pool, being the “handyman” for his five children, spending time at his cottage on Pleasant Lake, and being part of the “McDonald’s Gang”. Philip was a Communicant of Immaculate Conception R.C. Church, Knights of Columbus Council #149, St. Croix Bowling Club, St. Croix Country Club, and Sherman Bros. Post #3 American Legion. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Hollingdale; a brother Paul Hollingdale; brothers-in-law Bunny Robb and Jake Donahue; and sisters-in-law Bette Hollingdale and Theresa Donahue. Surviving are his loving wife of 54 years Gloria Hollingdale; five children, Philip “PJ” Hollingdale and his wife Jayne of Ottawa, ON, Bonnie Beck and her husband John of Milltown, NB, Brenda White and her husband Jay of Biddeford, Beth Hinson and her husband Eric of Robbinston, and Michael Hollingdale of Calais and his companion Sandra Goodine; a sister Jean Robb of Calais; brother Daniel Hollingdale and his wife Carol of Robbinston; eight grandchildren, Kristen Fowler and her husband Jason and children, Victoria and Lucas of Baileyville, Christie and Andrew Hollingdale of Ottawa, ON, Patrick and Bryce Beck of Milltown, NB, Joey and Charlotte White of Biddeford, and Hillary Hollingdale of Calais; sisters-in-law Jackie Hollingdale of Vermont, Connie Kukuchka and her husband Frank of Utah, and Shirley Donahue Young of Milltown, NB; brothers-in-law Paul Donahue and his wife Joni of Milltown, NB, Carl Donahue and his wife Helena of Milltown, NB, and Billy Donahue and his wife Pat of Edmonton, AB; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visiting hours will be held 10-11 a.m. Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Immaculate Conception R.C. Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will celebrated by Father James Plourde at 11 a.m. A private burial will take place in Calais Cemetery at a later date.
