Perry – R. Virginia Pottle, 98, passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2013 in Eastport. Virginia was born in Perry on April 3, 1915, daughter of the late Robert and Mary (Pottle) Golding. She loved Perry and in her earlier years was active in protecting the environment and its resources. Virginia loved animals and in her lifetime raised pigs, sheep, cows, and in her later years maintained protective shelters for both dogs and horses. She drove sulkies at the Pembroke Race Track, mostly for bragging rights being the only female driver at the time.
Virginia donated land for the Perry skating rink and ball field and was then active in the promotion of the Perry Sesquicentennial Celebration in 1968. She wrote several articles that are in the historical souvenir book. Virginia owned and operated the Red Sleigh on Route #1 in North Perry for approximately 15 years, selling antiques, Passamaquoddy baskets, and curiosities.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Walter K. Pottle; and a dear friend Clayton Cushing. She leaves cousins Mary Taylor of Anchorage, AK, and William Kendall of Perry, among other cousins as her relatives mostly predeceased her.
A graveside service was held on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at Bayview Cemetery in Perry. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
