Ralph Stanley Mahar, 89, longtime resident of Pembroke, passed peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, December 06, 2023, at the Downeast Memorial Hospital in Machias. He was born December 1, 1934, in Pembroke, ME son of Eugene C. and Olive (Carter) Mahar. He was educated in Maine schools graduating from Pembroke High School in 1952; obtained a BS in Education from Husson College in 1960; and in 1989 a Master of Education Degree from the University of Maine. Ralph was a 65-year member of the Masonic Lodge and a Shriner. He served on the Board of Trustees for Washington Academy and the Pembroke School Board.
Ralph served in the United States Navy for 4 years during the Korean War era mostly on-board aircraft carriers. Following the navy and obtaining his BS he worked for 35 years as a teacher and principal at Pembroke High School and later Pembroke Elementary School teaching several generations of Pembroke kids, many that were considered part of his extended family, and lifelong friends. During the summers, Ralph could be found doing carpentry work.
Ralph enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a hard worker who was always there to lend a helping hand to family and friends on any project that needed tending to. He enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing, especially going to hunting camp. His kind eyes and smile will continue to shine on us all.
Ralph was the last of his generation. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Avis Whorley and her husband, Edgar "Bud"; a brother, Carl Mahar and his wife Jean; and a sister, Elsie Cook and her husband Colby.
