Obituary for Raymond A Durrell

North Pole, AK and Calais – Raymond Allen Durrell, 36, slipped into heaven on August 12, 2015, as the result of an auto accident. Raym was born in Calais, ME, on June 6, 1979, the third son of Phillip and Karen (Dodge) Durrell of Calais, ME.

Raym graduated from Calais High School, Class of 1997, and from Pensacola Christian College in Pensacola, FL with a degree in criminal justice in 1999. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 2000, serving over 10 years in active duty, initially as an airplane crew chief, and later in computers, before he was “riffed”. Following his service, he attended University of Alaska in Fairbanks where he studied civil engineering.

Raym married his high school sweetheart, Michelle Marie Smith, daughter of David and Patricia (Quartermain) Smith of St. Stephen, on July 20, 2002. Together they lived in Utah, Virginia, and Alaska. Raym was employed at the United States Postal Service in North Pole, AK.

Raym loved the outdoors, anything woodsy. He thought Maine was great but Alaska threw him for a loop! WOW! – Beyond Great!

Raym had been home to Maine for his parent’s 50th wedding anniversary and was returning to his home in Alaska when God called him home.

Raym is survived by his loving wife of 13 years, Michelle; three sons, Phillip David, Gabriel Hunter, and Samuel James, all of North Pole, AK; his parents Phillip and Karen Durrell of Calais, ME; two brothers, Phillip Reed II and companion Gail Durgin of Hollis, ME, and Howard Arthur and wife Danielle of Martinez, GA; four aunts; four uncles; several cousins; three nephews, Steven Phillip of Germany, Jack Darius and Logan Marius of GA; and brothers and sisters in Christ of Moose Creek Baptist Church in Alaska, and Church of the Open Bible in Alexander, ME.

A celebration of Raym’s life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Church of the Open Bible, Route 9, Alexander. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.maysfuneralhome.com
