Richard Wayne “Ricky” Bowen Sr., 74, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, October 7, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family, after a courageous eleven-year battle with PLS, a form of ALS. Born on July 17, 1950, in Eastport, he was the cherished son of William and Jacquelyn (Wilson) Bowen Jr.

Ricky’s journey began in Eastport, where he attended school and worked alongside his father as a carpenter. His dedication led him to serve with honor in the U.S. Marine Corps, a chapter of his life that filled him with pride. After returning home, Ricky continued his work as a carpenter, contributing to the beloved community landmark, the pier in Eastport. His passion for craftsmanship was matched only by his devotion to his family; on June 5, 1974, he married the love of his life, Rhonda Ramsdell.

As a member of the Knights of Pythias and a former member of the V.F.W., Ricky formed deep bonds with his community. He was an avid outdoorsman, relishing every moment spent hunting, camping, four-wheeling, and delighting in the beauty of bird watching. These activities were more than hobbies; they were expressions of his vibrant spirit and love for life.

Ricky was also a proud founding member of the United Veterans Honor Guard of Washington County, selflessly serving his community for over 30 years and honoring those who served before him.

Ricky leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter. He is predeceased by his parents, a granddaughter Mikayla Rose Bowen, siblings Elaine, Billy, Larry, Dale, and nephew Dana Bowen Jr. He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Rhonda Bowen; four children, Richard Bowen II and wife Sioux of Pleasant Point, Christy Sutherland and husband Jesse of Eastport, Robert Bowen and companion Kelly Carter of Calais, and Brian Bowen and wife Jennifer McGuire of Perry. His heart swells with pride for his eleven grandchildren: Dustin (who he raised as a son) and his companion Bailey, Timothy, Trevor, John, Kelli, Shaun, Shauna, Gavin, Brantley, Nate, and Aaron, as well as the anticipation of welcoming his 12th grandchild this spring.

He is also survived by three brothers: Steven Bowen and wife Brenda of Perry, Randy Bowen and wife Kelly of Calais, and Dana Bowen and wife Mina of Eastport. Ricky cherished special friendships, including that of Stormi McLaughlin, who was like a daughter to him and her daughter and Ricky’s Godchild, Chloe, and his best friends Tony LaCoute, Richard Mealey, and Andy Pottle, along with numerous dear friends.

A Celebration of Life to honor Ricky will be held at his home, 270 Cannon Hill Rd., Perry, on Saturday, October 19, 2024, from 12 noon to 2 p.m., followed by a military service at 2:00 p.m. Together, let us remember and celebrate the incredible life of Ricky Bowen—a loving husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and friend who touched the hearts of many. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
