Baileyville, ME & East Stroudsburg, PA – Richard Franklin Hillman Sr., 88, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, November 12, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. Richard was born in Wilmington, NC on August 14, 1927, son of John and Beulah (McQuillin) Hillman. He graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School in Philadelphia, PA, Class of 1946. Richard worked various jobs until enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he served his country during WWII in the Infantry division. Following the war he moved to Baltimore, MD and attended Maryland State University, and worked at Ft. McHenry in the Signal Corps for the Civil Service. While in Baltimore he met his future wife, Delores Barnes, and they were soon united in marriage on December 22, 1950. Richard went to work for Bethlehem Steel where he worked as a Metallurgical Inspector. When Bethlehem Steel went on strike he returned to the Civil Service and worked in the Signal Corps at Tobyhanna Depot in the Pocono Mountains until his retirement on January 3, 1986. In 2006, Richard and Delores decided to move to Maine to be closer to their son. He was a member of Church of the Living Stone in Baileyville, the American Legion, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening.
In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by a son, David Hillman; two grandsons, Malcolm and Carl Fox; his sister Emily Cobb; and three brothers, John, William, and Robert. Surviving are his loving wife of 65 years, Delores Hillman of Baileyville; three children, Detra Fox of Philadelphia, PA, Richard Hillman Jr. and wife Beth of Baileyville, and Teresa Gracie and husband Easton of Pocono Summit, PA; nine grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; nieces, and nephews.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Church of the Living Stone, 55 Broadway St., Baileyville. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Prospect Cemetery, 501 Prospect St., East Stroudsburg, PA. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
