Eastport – Richard A. Young Sr., 72, passed away Monday, September 7, 2009 at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Richard was born in Stewartstown, NH on September 18, 1936, son of Roger and Esther (Leroux) Young. He graduated from high school, Class of 1954, and entered the U.S. Air Force where he served eight years as a radar technician. While in the Air Force, Richard married Stella Marsh. After being honorably discharged, Richard worked as a television repairman for several years until he started as a police officer for the City of Eastport. Richard graduated Valedictorian from the State of Maine Criminal Justice Academy in June, 1980, and was proud of being the “oldest” student. He was devoted to the law enforcement field serving as a patrolman, Sergeant and finally as Chief of Police for Eastport, retiring in 1989. Richard also served as a patrolman for the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. After retiring he worked for the Crisis Intervention Center in Machias. He was very active in the Eastport community. Richard served on the Eastport Port Authority, Eastport school board, chairman for the Democratic Party in Washington County, and as a Justice of the Peace. He also was a member of the Knights of Pythias and the St. Croix Bowling Club. Richard was a proud supporter of Shead High School. He coached cross country in the 1970’s, was one of the founders of the Chess Club and the Shead Radio Club, and made sure the students made it to the away games by volunteering as a driver. Richard had a natural talent in music, playing many instruments by ear including the guitar, banjo, fiddle and bass. He was also a certified gemologist. With everything that he did, Richard’s favorite pastimes were those he spent with his family. Richard was predeceased by his father, Roger Young; and two brothers, Jimmy and Ernie Shute. Surviving are his loving wife of 49 years, Stella Young; six children, Roger Young of Eastport, Richard Young Jr. of Eastport, Bonny Lockhart and her husband Clarence of Calais, Scott Young of Eastport Penny Young of Eastport, and Jimmy White of Eastport; five grandchildren, Richard Young III of Eastport, Roger Young Jr. of Raleigh, N.C., Kyle Hall of Calais, Dalton Young of Eastport and Scott Young of Eastport; six sisters, Carolyn and her husband Roy, Donna, Linda and her husband Ronald, Barbara and her husband Andre, Debbie and Jan, all of New Hampshire; two brothers, Robert Young of N.H., and Sherwood Shute of Maine; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
