After being honorably discharged, Richard worked as a television repairman for several years until he started as a police officer for the City of Eastport. Richard graduated Valedictorian from the State of Maine Criminal Justice Academy in June, 1980, and was proud of being the “oldest” student. He was devoted to the law enforcement field serving as a patrolman, Sergeant and finally as Chief of Police for Eastport, retiring in 1989. He coached cross country in the 1970’s, was one of the founders of the Chess Club and the Shead Radio Club, and made sure the students made it to the away games by volunteering as a driver. Richard had a natural talent in music, playing many instruments by ear including the guitar, banjo, fiddle and bass. He was also a certified gemologist. With everything that he did, Richard’s favorite pastimes were those he spent with his family. Richard was predeceased by his father, Roger Young; and two brothers, Jimmy and Ernie Shute.
