Obituary for Robert Warren MacKintire

PEMBROKE – Captain Robert W. Mackintire, 77, died December 17, 2010, at EMMC in Bangor. He was born on August 15, 1933, in Somerville, MA, the son of Ernest V. and Louise F. (Bailey) Mackintire. The family moved to Everett, MA, where Bob attended school and graduated from Everett High School in 1951. As a youth, he loved fishing the rivers and lakes in Massachusetts and Maine. Bob also spent many summers at his Grandmother’s home by the ocean in Brant Rock, MA, where he discovered his love for the sea. It was there that he decided to spend his life in the Navy or Merchant Marine. Although he was urged by educators to attend MIT, Bob chose his beloved Massachusetts Maritime Academy and upon graduation in the Class of 1954 entered the U.S. Naval Reserve as Ensign and reported for active duty as First Lieutenant on the USS Brough in the spring of 1956. That fall the Brough was assigned to Operation DeepFreeze II in Antarctica as a support ship. The Brough left Newport, RI, sailed through the Panama Canal, crossed the Pacific Ocean & Equator, and reached Dunedin, New Zealand, one month later, where her assignment was to report weather conditions and communications on ship traffic. It was quite a remarkable event at the time. In 1959, he resigned from the active Navy and secured a position as Third Mate with Atlantic Refining Company (ARCO) and several years later joined Texaco Co. where he served as Captain with the highest traditions of those who follow the sea. Bob’s favorite hobby was flying. He earned his Private Pilot’s license and owned several small planes. In 1973 Bob married and moved to Washington County, Maine, settling in Pembroke. He continued to sail as Captain for Texaco until he was forced to retire when the company sold its last ship. In retirement, he was happy to serve as Captain of the Pleon, one of the charming Tugs in Eastport, until he had to resign due to failing health. He is survived by his sister, Carol Ann Freden of Pembroke; his nephew, Mark Freden of Brant Rock, MA; and his ex-wife, Patt Kydd of Pembroke. In addition to his parents, Bob was predeceased by his nephew, Eric Freden. Bob requested that no funeral or memorial service be held on his behalf so we will remember him privately as a kind and gentle man and wish him fair winds on his voyage. Funeral arrangements are in the care of Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
