Obituary for Rupert U. Greenlaw

LUBEC - Rupert U. Greenlaw, 96, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at a nursing home facility in Portsmouth, N.H. He was born April 26, 1918, son of Melborne and Eola (Wilcox) Greenlaw.


He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II, in the Infantry Division. He was among the first wave, first raid at Normandy. Among the medals he received were, Good Conduct, Theater Sv, and the Purple Heart. He possessed a commercial captain’s license. He was a commercial lobster fisherman for many years.

He enjoyed beach combing, bringing his treasures home to make crafts to delight all who came to visit. He was an avid fisherman. He tied his own fishing flies, and made his own fishing lures out of spoon handles. It was well known when it was time for mackerel fishing. That was his favorite time of year. As much as he enjoyed his crafts and fishing, he loved his family even more.

He will be sadly missed, and is survived by his wife Christine (Ashby) Greenlaw of Rochester, New Hampshire, three sons, Wayne Greenlaw and companion Wilma Cole of Bellingham, Washington, Melborne Greenlaw of Calais and William Greenlaw and his wife Elaine of Campobello Island, NB; two daughters, Eola (Greenlaw) Miskell and husband Daniel of Rochester, New Hampshire and Marrietta Greenlaw of Machias; grandchildren, Laura, Robert, Jessica, Benjamin, Janelle, Melborne Jr., Nathaniel, Christina and Jestine; 11 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Eugene Greenlaw; brothers, Douglas, Osborne and Melborne Jr., and daughter-in-law Ruth Greenlaw.

A memorial service will be held graveside July 19 at 3:00 p.m. at Green Acres Cemetery in Lubec. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Rupert in a special way may make donations to the Lost Fishermen’s Memorial Fund, PO Box 194, Lubec, ME 04652 or at www.lostfishermensmemorial.com.
