Calais – Ruth D. Hayward, 91, passed away Saturday, December 17, 2011 at home with her family by her side. Ruth was born in Vanceboro on August 7, 1920, daughter of the late Harry and Mary (Holbrook) Davis. She graduated from Vanceboro High School and Westbrook Junior College. After graduation, Ruth returned home and married Clinton Hayward in 1940. She was a bookkeeper for Sears until beginning her career as a bookkeeper for Dead River Oil Co., retiring with 30 years of service. After retirement, Ruth and her husband owned and operated Hayward Ceramics for over 30 years. She was a member of the Church of the Living Stone in Baileyville and Orion Chapter #45 Order of the Eastern Star in Calais. Ruth enjoyed knitting, reading, ceramics, attending gospel concerts, shopping, crocheting, especially for different charitable projects, and most importantly spending quality time with her family. In addition to her parents, Ruth was predeceased by her husband Clinton Hayward Sr.; an infant son David Clay; grandsons Nicholas Armstrong and Joshua Hancock; daughter-in-law Patricia Hayward; and two sisters Betty Dudley and Katherine Harper. Surviving are her six children, Betty Jean Bisson and her husband Lyle of Minneapolis, MN, Clinton Hayward Jr. of Winslow, Janet Yardley of Calais, Karel MacKay and her husband Al of Dorchester, MA, Debbie Hancock and her husband Gordon of Calais, and Marcia Hayward of Calais; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; a sister Harriett Osgood and her husband Fred of Westbrook; a brother Lee Davis of Barnstable, MA; four sisters-in-law, Marion Johnson and her husband Paul of Meddybemps, Patty Hayward of Calais, Sara Cameron of Calais, and Ann Hacker and her husband Ken of Ottawa, ON; and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held 12 – 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at the Church of the Living Stone, 55 Broadway, Baileyville. A celebration of Ruth’s life will begin 1 p.m. Tuesday in the church with Pastors Keith Moody and Bob Hinton officiating. Burial will follow in Calais Cemetery.
