Ruth Maude Lyons, 95, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at Calais Community Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Ruth was born in Leonardsville, NB, on April 5, 1929, to Osgood and Effie (Doughty) Leslie.
Growing up on Deer Island, NB, Ruth began her journey into adulthood at just16 years old when she started working the cotton mill in Milltown, NB. It was during this time she met the love of her life, Walter Lyons Jr. Their union in marriage on August 31, 1947 led them to establish their home in Calais, ME. Ruth devoted herself to raising their children while also working at Hathaway Shirt Factory. In time, she embarked on a new chapter by opening her own daycare business and later providing in-home daycare until her retirement.
Ruth's faith played a central role in her life as she was a dedicated member of the Second Baptist Church in Calais. Her zest for life shone through her enjoyment of traveling, solving crossword puzzles, and indulging in game shows.
In addition to her husband Walter Lyons Jr., Ruth was predeceased by a great-granddaughter and several siblings. Left to cherish her memory are her six children: Kent Lyons and wife Sherry of Englewood, FL; Leslie Lyons and wife Kathy of St. Stephen, NB; Laura Nixon and husband Millen of St. Stephen, NB; Wade Lyons and wife Monica of St. Stephen, NB; Stephen Lyons and wife Cindee Wheeler of Stannard, VT; and Amy Barnard Lyons of Lubec. She also leaves behind a legacy of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews who will forever hold her dear in their hearts; and her dear friends, June Gillespie and Rita Stewart.
As we mourn her physical presence on earth, we find solace in knowing that Ruth's kindness and legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
