Obituary for Sallie C. Comstock

Calais & Robbinston – Sallie C. Comstock, 92, passed away Sunday, March 22, 2015 at her home with her family by her side. Sallie was born in St. Stephen, NB on October 29, 1922, daughter of the late Herb and Florence (Newnham) Maxwell. After graduating from high school in Saint John, NB, she moved to Massachusetts and earned her nursing degree at Newton-Wellesley School of Nursing. Sallie worked as a nurse for various hospitals in Massachusetts and New York until marrying Roy Comstock Jr. on August 2, 1947 in Troy, NY. She left the nursing field at that time to raise her family. In 1953, Sallie and Roy moved to Calais. After her two children left home, Sallie worked for Mr. Paperback in Calais for many years. She was a member of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, St. Anne’s Daughters, St. Anne’s Guild, and a volunteer with Calais Regional Hospital Auxiliary. Sallie enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens, making homemade donuts, canning, and most importantly, spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, Sallie was predeceased by her loving husband Roy; her sister Mary Russell; and her brother Gray Maxwell. Surviving are her two children, Peter Comstock and his wife Edna Mae of Sidney, and Mary Ann Duvall and her husband Howard of Robbinston; four grandchildren, Tony Comstock and his wife Laura of CO, Melissa Miller and her husband Brandon of UT, Jeremy Duvall and his wife Annie of MA, and Jodi Rahko and her husband Dan of NC; 14 great-grandchildren, Matthew, Joshua, Maria, Hannah, Issac, Dominic, Gabriel, Therese, Maxwell, Jack, Chris, Lilah, Riley, and Michael; many nieces and nephews; and her canine companion Poco. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Calais Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sallie’s memory may be made to WCCC Outdoor Adventure Center, attn: WCCC Business Office, 1 College Ave., Calais, ME 04619.
