Samuel Arnold Saunders, 73, passed away September 22, 2022 at EMMC. He was born on August 7, 1949 in St. Stephen NB, the son of Nina (Cookson) and Samuel A. Saunders.
Samuel graduated from Calais Memorial High School in 1968. Following graduation, Sam attended Northern Maine Community College, where he studied electrical construction and met his wife of 51 years, Kristi (Bradbury) Saunders.
Sam was employed for 20 years as a construction electrician with IBEW, and for over 20 years with Woodland Pulp LLC in Baileyville. Sam retired from the Grand Falls Power Plant in 2013. Sam served 10 years in the United States Army National Guard.
Sam was active in local basketball, baseball and softball teams in Washington County and New Brunswick. For many years, Sam was a youth volunteer basketball coach for the Calais Recreation Department. Sam loved hunting and fishing, and enjoyed a good card game. He was happiest at the lake, spending time with his family, whom he loved dearly.
Sam was predeceased by his parents, Samuel and Nina Saunders; sisters Nancy Perry and Judith Antoniello and special cousin Richard Cookson. He is survived by his wife, Kristi (Bradbury) Saunders; daughter Allison (Saunders) Atkinson and son-in-law Stacey of St. Stephen NB; two grandchildren, Zachary Samuel Atkinson of Alexander, Rachael (Atkinson) Niles and her husband Tyler of Calais; three great-grandchildren Callie Kristi Ann, Hunter Samuel and Natalie Quinn; beloved K9 companion Manny, best friends Drew, Mike, Billy and many other special friends, nieces and nephews.
