Calais – Sara Jane Cameron, 86, died at her home on Monday, June 1, 2020 surrounded by family. Sara was born in Marine City, MI on June 26, 1933 to Henry and Blanche (Howland) Hayward. Soon after, she and her family moved to Vanceboro for a few years and then finally relocated to Calais where she stayed. Sara married John S. Cameron in 1952, with whom she enjoyed 32 years of marriage until his passing in 1984.
Sara was outgoing, loved community involvement and made friends quickly. She enjoyed roller skating as a child and for many years she attended The Second Baptist Church regularly where she sang in the choir and eventually taught Sunday School. Sara was a member of Orion Chapter No. 45 O.E.S. in Calais, VFW Auxiliary Calais Post #9779 and The Calais Sewing Guild. She was a talented seamstress and spent countless hours altering clothes for friends, family and even the Calais Police Department.
In addition to her parents, Sara was predeceased by her husband, John; her son, Leslie Cameron and eight siblings, Hazen, Clint, Sam, John and Patty Hayward, Sissy Johnson, Corliss Keef and Jeri Mae McCoy.
She is survived by three children, Samuel Cameron of Alaska, Heather Rambjor and her companion Skip James and John Cameron and his wife Kim Pottle, all of Calais; sister, Ann Hacker and her husband Kenneth of Ottawa, Ontario; twelve grandchildren, Jason, Troy, Noah, Patrick, Samantha, Chris, Trina, Leif, Cameron, Scott, Jesse and Kayla; fourteen great grandchildren, Vanessa, Olivia, Tommy, Laura, Ewan, Zoey, Cameron, Mya, Emy, Liam, Nils, Savannah, Harleigh, and Jeffrey; many nieces, nephews and friends and her feline companion, Friskie.

Sara’s family would like to thank the nurses of CHCS Home Health & Hospice for their wonderful care, Melony, Janie, Judy, and Sherrie.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm, Thursday, June 4th at Mays Funeral Home 26 Church St., Calais. Committal will follow at Calais Cemetery. May attendees please remember to bring a face covering.
