Pleasant Point – Shirley Jean Cogswell, 71, passed away Saturday, July 23, 2016 at a Bangor hospital with family by her side. Shirley was born at Peter Dana Point on October 14, 1944 to Francis Lola and Madeline (Stevens) Paul. After attending school at St. Ann’s Indian Mission she worked as a nurse’s aide for Calais Regional Hospital. Later she became a dispatcher for Pleasant Point Police Dept., personnel manager for both Pleasant Point and Indian Township, served as Chief Judge for Pleasant Point, a security guard for the Pequot Nation Governor, and last as a receptionist for Maine Indian Education. Shirley was a Communicant of St. Ann R.C. Church and was a member of Pleasant Point Sodality, Pleasant Point School Board, and a life member of the Cooking Club of America. She enjoyed cooking, drawing, sewing, altering garments, baking, sharing her food with others, but most especially being a mother, grandmother and auntie.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was predeceased by a sister Mary Paul; and a niece Tiffany. Surviving are her six children, Lynn Mitchell and husband Dana of Pleasant Point, Alan Lola of Pleasant Point, Maria Bailey of Bangor, Peter Bailey III and companion Stephanie Schmermund of Bangor, Stephanie Bailey and companion Chad Sockabasin of Indian Township, and Kim Bailey and companion Dylan Francis of Pleasant Point; ten grandchildren, Alexis Moore, Lance Clement, Emily Lola, Cortney Levesque, Kathleen Clement, Darren “Brotha” Clement, Tamara Clement, Sequin Sockabasin, Madeline Dominguezmiller, and Jesus Dominguezmiller; four great-grandchildren, Kci-yap Dana, Nakaiya Dana, Liam Tomah and Levi Apt; 16 siblings, Erlene Paul, Kenneth Paul, Kathleen Paul, Michael Paul and wife Terry, Steven Paul, Edward Paul, Lisa Paul and husband William Thompson, Sharon Paul, Donald Paul and wife Karen, Ronald Paul, Jean Paul, Jan Paul, Jeannie Geel and husband Shawn, Frank Lola and wife Sterling, Alvera Farrell, and Joseph Mitchell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held at her daughter’s home, Stephanie Bailey, 13 Birch Circle, Peter Dana Point beginning 2 pm Wednesday, July 27, 2016 until 1 p.m. Friday, July 29. A Mass in Memorium will be celebrated by Rev. Kevin Martin 2 p.m. Friday, July 29 at St. Ann R.C. Church, Peter Dana Point. Burial will follow in the Indian Township Tribal Cemetery.
