Eastport - Shirley Mae Spinney died at the Calais Regional Hospital on May 7th, 2015 after a long illness. She was born July 31st 1930 in Calais to Raymond and Marion (McCracken) Creamer. On May 13th, 1951 she married her high school sweetheart James H. Spinney in Eastport and they enjoyed 64 years together. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Philip, cousin Betty Ferguson, and infant son Michael. She is survived by her loving husband James, of Eastport; three devoted sons, Ron and wife Elaine of Eastport, Roger and wife Ann of Amherst, New Hampshire, and Robert and wife Trica of Westbrook; nephew Glenn Creamer; nieces Karen Theriault and Ronda Shavers; sisters-in-law Ann Spinney and Virginia Creamer; cousins Barry Thompson and Patsy Magoon; three grandchildren, Patrick and his wife Elizabeth, Charles, and Abigail; five step-grandchildren, many great- and great-great-step-grandchildren including special great-grandson Adam Bailey; and special friend Peggy Foss.
Shirley graduated from Shead Memorial High School in Eastport in 1949 with a degree in business. She worked as a cashier at Newberry's Five and Dime in Eastport before and after her marriage. She returned to work when Jim took over Cummings's Garage, keeping the books there.
She was a life-long Episcopalian and served on the vestry of Christ Church in Eastport. A past Chief of the Pythian Sisters Seaside Temple #59 in Eastport, she also served on the Peavey Memorial Library board. Shirley loved reading and always had a mystery novel going. She was a den mother to Cub Scout Pack 121. Her house was a gathering place for her sons' friends, who devoured her excellent whoopie pies and apple pie. In recent years she enjoyed activities at the Eastport Senior Center and beating Jim at Gin Rummy. Shirley liked to travel and collected mugs and refrigerator magnets from every place she visited.
Visiting hours will be held 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2015 at Mays Funeral Home – Flagg Chapel, 72 High St., Eastport, where a celebration of Shirley’s life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 9. Burial will follow in Restlawn Cemetery, Perry.
