Obituary for Sterling Ira Marshall

Calais – Sterling Ira Marshall, 76, passed away Thursday, July 05, 2012 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, MA. Sterling was born in Calais on November 18, 1935, son of the late Sterling and Ruby (Wilson) Marshall. After attending Calais Memorial High School, he enlisted in the US Air Force serving as a Maintenance Scheduling Technician. With over 21 years of active duty service, Sterling retired as a S/Sgt in 1973. He returned to Calais and eventually moved to Chatham, MA, where he started his career with the U.S. Postal Service. Sterling served in post offices in Massachusetts as well as in Calais before his retirement with over 20 years service. He was a member of the V.F.W. in Chatham, MA was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed coin collecting. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth. Surviving are his five children, Brian Marshall and his wife Karen of Calais, Kevin Marshall of Redlands, CA, Sterling Marshall Jr. and his wife LoRay of Long Beach, CA, Dana Marshall and his wife Marlene of San Bernardino, CA, and Divina Goddard and her husband Brian of Highland, CA; a sister Phoebe Wilson of Calais; 11 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and two nieces, Anna Wilson of Calais and Ramona Merrill of Hampden. Visiting hours will be held 6 – 8 p.m. Monday, July 9, 2012 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A celebration of Sterling’s life will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow in Calais Cemetery. Donations in Sterling’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, One Bowdoin Mill Island, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.
