Wichita Falls, TX & Pleasant Point – Susan A. (Newell) Barrera, 74, passed away in Wichita Falls, Texas on December 9, 2014. She was born to Aloysious and Adelaide (Soctomah) Newell in Pleasant Point on May 19, 1940 where she grew up and attended school until the age of 18 when she married Santiago Ortiz-Barrera Sr. Susan traveled the world with Santiago, living briefly in Italy before permanently relocating to Wichita Falls. She spent over a half century there but never lost ties to her home community of Pleasant Point, she returned almost annually to celebrate Indian Days with her family and continued to speak her native language of Passamaquoddy. Susan was a big Dallas Cowboys fan and loved talking football with her brother. She loved fishing and playing bingo and will be remembered as a wonderful cook, her family would always look forward to all of her Mexican dishes. In addition to her parents, Susan was predeceased by her husband Santiago Ortiz-Barrera Sr. She will be missed by her five children, Santiago O. Barrera Jr. and his wife Diana of TN, Richard Barrera of Wichita Falls, Peter Barrera and his wife Renee of FL, Phillip Barrera and his companion Sandra Jiminez of Wichita Falls, and Lori Barrera Towns and her husband J. Allan Towns of VA; two brothers, Wayne Newell and his wife Sandra and Philip Newell, all from Indian Township; her sister Martina Fortin and her husband Herman of Pleasant Point; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; her only surviving aunt who she was very close to, Mary “Molly” Minno of Calais; special friends Hilda Lewis of Pleasant Point and Theresa Downing of Indian Township and many nieces, nephews and cousins who each held a special place in her heart. Visitation will begin for Susan at 1:00 p.m., Monday December 29th at the home of Martina Fortin, 26 Wekosos Lane, Pleasant Point until 10:00 a.m. Tuesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 30th at St. Ann’s RC Church, Pleasant Point, burial will follow at Tribal Cemetery.
