Calais – Thomas William Bentum III, 88, passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at Calais Regional Hospital. Thomas was born in London, Ontario, on February 27, 1928, son of Thomas Bentum Jr. and Isabelle (Mayer) Bentum. After graduating high school in Ontario, he enlisted in the Canadian Army at the age of 19. Thomas served as a Tank Commander and retired in 1967 with 20 years of service. While on leave, he met the love of his life, Olive Carlow, and they were married on August 28, 1956 in Calais. After his service, Thomas and Olive moved to Calais and he worked for Todd’s Hardware for 15 years, and later as a security guard for Calais Regional Hospital until retiring at the age of 65. He was a member of Calais United Methodist Church and enjoyed woodworking, caning chairs, gardening and traveling.
In addition to his parents, Thomas was predeceased by his two sisters, Joan Logan and Isabelle Rose; and his two brothers, James and John Bentum. Surviving are his loving wife of 60 years, Olive Bentum of Calais; two children, Rev. Dr. Thomas Bentum and wife Deneane of Gales Ferry, CT, and Nancy Gallinaro of Portland; three grandchildren, Peter Bentum and wife Ioana of Portsmouth, NH, and twins, Hannah Wells and husband Nathan of Gorham, NH, and Rebekah Mohr and husband Phillip of Philadelphia, PA; a great-granddaughter, Winnie Bentum; many nieces and nephews; and numerous dear friends.
A celebration of Thomas’ life will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations in Thomas’ memory may be made to the American Lung Assoc., 122 State St., Augusta, ME 04330. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
