East Machias - Thomas Hiram Finlay died April 22,2022, at age 83.
Beloved husband of 60 years to Gail Finlay; loving father of John Finlay (Pismai Finlay) and David Finlay; proud grandfather of Alexander Finlay, Jordan Finlay and Pilaiwan Abad; great grandfather to a new great grandchild Thomas Anthony Finlay. Son of the late Alexander and Lillian Finlay; brother of David Finlay (Jane Finlay) and the late Emily Dean (Edwin Dean).
After serving in the US Army, Tom got a B.S. in Chemistry and a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Maryland. He was on the faculties of Rockefeller University and New York University School of Medicine where as a professor he taught chemistry while doing cancer research. Retiring to East Machias in 2002 Tom contributed his talents and efforts to environmental and community affairs. At the Sunrise Senior College, University of Maine Machias, Tom taught courses on biology, anthropology, and evolution. Tom was an active member in the Volunteer Lake Monitor Program for Gardner Lake, The Fundy Audubon Society, The Pathfinders, and the Washington Democratic Committee. Tom loved camping, boating, fishing, hiking, gardening and being outdoors. He thought Downeast Maine one of the most beautiful places on Earth. He died after facing the challenges of Alzheimer’s dementia. Let Thomas be remembered in the hearts of those who have known and loved him; this is the best of all memorials.
