Obituary for Thomas N Smith

CHARLOTTE – Thomas N. Smith, 63, passed away unexpectedly at his home on March 2, 2011. He was born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick on July 9, 1947 to Nelson and Elva (Hastey) Smith. Tom attended local schools and graduated from Calais Memorial High School, class of 1965 and Northern Maine Vocational School in Presque Isle. He became a Master Electrician and worked for many years as an electrician on construction jobs, at various paper mills and his last job before retirement was the U.S. Customs building in Calais. Tom served his county as a member of the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Kennedy. He was a member of the American Legion, Sherman Bros. Post 3, Calais and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, local chapter 1253; he also served as a tax assessor for the Town of Charlotte for many years. Tom was a kind and quiet man who was always willing to help others, he enjoyed woodworking and spending time at home; Tom will be sadly missed. Tom was predeceased by his parents; survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and William Jones of Charlotte; an Uncle Jack Smith and his wife Sally of Calais; an Aunt Barbara Mylen and her husband Norman of Charlotte and several cousins. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Round Pond Cemetery in Charlotte. Contributions in Tom’s memory can be made to Charlotte Volunteer Fire Department, 1100 Ayers Jct. Rd., Charlotte, ME 04666 or to First Light Farm Equine Shelter, 576 Shore Rd., Perry, ME 04667. Arrangements are in the care of Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
