Princeton – Velma Elizabeth McLellan, 89, passed away August 5, 2013, in South Princeton. Velma was born in West Princeton on March 31, 1924, daughter of the late George and Annie (Seavey) Clark. She graduated with 3rd Honors from Princeton High School, Class of 1942. Her parents worked in a woods camp, her father running the camp and her mother cooking. She boarded in the town in order to attend school while babysitting children in exchange for her board. She worked in the local mill in Princeton making wooden ice cream spoons. On April 22, 1946, she married her love, Alton McLellan. She was a stay-at-home mom, raising her five daughters, until she started a career with Georgia Pacific as a security guard, where she worked until her retirement. Velma was an avid reader and especially enjoyed reading westerns and history. She loved the outdoors and spent countless hours going for walks and bird watching and was known to find a home for stray animals, a few she loved and kept. She also loved to cook and her bread was enjoyed by many.
In addition to her parents Velma was predeceased by her loving husband Alton McLellan; her siblings who she loved dearly, two brothers Alton Clark and Forrest Clark; and her sister Ruby Clark Leighton. Surviving are her five daughters, Nancy Norman and her husband Karl of Phippsburg, Sally Dennis and her husband Cleven of San Diego, CA, Dale Bolton of Breadalbane, NB, Katherine Mercier and her husband Kenneth of Alexander, and Marilyn Dwelley and her husband Tom of Alexander; five grandchildren, Mark Norman of Phippsburg, Erik Norman and his wife Meghan of Durham, Nicole Dennis of San Diego, CA, Katherine Dennis of College Station, TX, and Matthew Bolton of Buxton; two great-grandchildren, Shelby V. Norman and Kaitlin E. Norman; many nieces and nephews; her "brown-eyed" daughter, Billie Ward; long time friends Vivian Scott and Diane Gibson; and her special care-givers.
Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Monday, August 26, 2013 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais, ME 04619. A celebration of Velma’s life will be held at the funeral home 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 27, with burial to follow in South Princeton.
