Obituary for Wallace Reginald Townsend

Eastport and Largo, FL – Wallace Reginald Townsend, 87, passed away March 5, 2016, at C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center in Bay Pines, FL, with his children by his side. Wallace was born in Marion on July 9, 1928, son of the late Clarence and Jeanette (Rice) Townsend. In October, 1945, he joined the U.S. Navy to serve his country during WWII. Following his enlistment Wallace returned home to complete his high school education. On July 28, 1950, he married Audrey Pottle. He worked as a hand stitcher for Sandler Shoe Co. in Bangor and later for Bangor Shoe Co. After the shoe factory closed, Wallace worked for Reed’s Auto Body & Paint Shop in Brewer as a painter, retiring in 1991.

He was a 40 + year member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Penobscot Aerie #3177 in Brewer, and American Legion Post #0178 in Coral Springs, FL. Wallace enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, spending time outdoors, camping with family, square dancing, and in earlier years being involved with the Boy Scouts as a Troop Leader.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 30 years, Audrey Townsend; a grandson Mark Crosby Townsend; seven sisters, Ruby Townsend, Mary Glidden, Florence Ashby, Dorothy Young, Pansy Newman, Constance Barnes, and Patricia Bridges; and three brothers, Rodney, Anthony and Arthur Townsend. Surviving are: his four children, Ralph Townsend of WI, Allan Townsend of Orrington, David Townsend of Holden, and Lloyd Townsend of Augusta; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Muriel Edwards of Augusta and Alice Craig of Fitchburg, MA; one brother Joseph Townsend of FL; his companion Mary Camic of Eastport and Largo, FL; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service with military honors will be held in the summer at Bayside Cemetery in Eastport. In lieu of flowers, donations in Wallace’s memory may be made to either PAWS Brave Hearts, 368 South St., Calais, ME 04619, or Blakey United Methodist Church in Eastport.
