William Peter DelMonaco Sr.

CALAIS – William Peter DelMonaco Sr., 86, died January 8, 2013 at the Calais Regional Hospital. William was born in Providence, Rhode Island March 7, 1926, the son of Pietro and Maria Maddalena (DiCenzo) DelMonaco. He attended Nathaniel Greene Jr. High School and graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in Providence, RI. On May 27, 1947 he married the love of his life, Phoebe Saunders. He was predeceased by his wife, his parents, his sister Anna Drew and several brothers and sisters-in-law. William is survived by his sons, William and his wife Jane, Chris and his girlfriend, Brenda; grandsons, Anthony and his girlfriend Dr. Jennifer Robichaud; Joshua and his wife Caroline; Benjamin and his girlfriend, Ashley Billips; brothers, Nicholas Sr. and his wife Geraldine; Edmund Sr. and his wife Margaret; Peter and his wife Irene; Godson, Dr. John DelMonaco; Goddaughter, Donna Geel; brother-in-law, Gary Saunders; many nieces and nephews and special friends Alan and Candace Dwelley who welcomed Bill, “15”, as part of their family too. He moved to Maine in 1939 with his brothers to work with their father and uncle, Thomas DiCenzo. William worked for 71 years in the construction business. Some of his accomplishments included various post war-time projects such as the Quoddy Dam, the Maine Interstate highway system, the dry docks in southern Maine and the Houlton and Dublois airstrips. In later years, Bill worked with the re-building of Route 9 and other highways and many municipal utility projects. William joined the US Army serving in the Tank Corp of General George Patton’s Third Army from 1944 until the end of WWII in 1945. William traveled from Fort Dix, NJ to LaHarve, France and then on to Germany where his unit met up with General Patton’s third Army on the Rhine River. William talked about his experiences and the support of the German people for our services there and how we freed them from the horrors of Hitler’s oppression. He often talked about the travesties Hitler inflicted on his own people. William was very patriotic and proud to have served his country. William enjoyed being with family and friends and the gang at the Wickachee Restaurant. He loved family vacations to Florida – swimming and soaking up the sun. He was an avid fan of The Boston Celtics and The Boston Red Sox. William was always ready to help anyone with a project and would gladly volunteer his time. William was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, St. Croix #1 Firehouse Restoration Committee, Associated General Contractors of Maine and the Maine Better Transportation Association. Visiting hours will be held Friday, January 11th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 12th at the Immaculate Conception R.C. Church, 31 Calais Ave., Calais. Interment will follow at Calais Cemetery. All are invited to then join the family at the church for a reception.
