Obituary for William Joseph McNamara

Calais – William J. McNamara, 86, died Saturday, January 13, 2007 at his home in Calais surrounded by his loving family. William was born January 10, 1921 in Milltown, N.B., the son of Francis and Ferne (Flemming) McNamara. He grew up in Calais and graduated from Calais Academy. Following graduation, Bill worked for a time in Boston for the Gilchrist Company, but soon returned home to marry his high school sweetheart, Lois (Brown) McNamara. They have been Calais residents their entire lives and recently celebrated their sixty-third wedding anniversary. William was for many years Superintendent for the Northeast Industries Company. He later managed the Calais Building Supply Company, and following his retirement, worked part-time for the local Hardwicke Store. Bill was a Communicant of the Immaculate Conception R.C. Church and was a Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 149. He was also a member of the Lions Club for a time. William was an avid golfer and for many years was a member of the St. Croix Country Club where in addition to participating in club leagues and tournaments, he served in many administrative capacities. His favorite activity was to be Husband and Dad to his wife and children and he devoted himself to those roles. Bill was a selfless man who provided a solid anchor of unconditional love for his family. He will be remembered by all as a gentle man and a gentleman. William was predeceased by two infant children, son Mark and daughter Roxanne. In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by a son, Michael McNamara and his wife Patricia of Cape Elizabeth; a daughter, Susan Ellen Clark and her husband Arnold of Milltown, ME; four grandchildren, Michele McNamara of Portland, William McNamara and his wife Alane of Burlington, VT, Arnold S. Clark and his wife Tamara of Winslow, and Derek Clark of South Portland; three great-grandchildren, Sarah and Amy McNamara of Burlington, VT, and Sofia Clark of Winslow; a sister, Joyce Beecher of Cape Elizabeth; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Daniel and Grace Brown of Bradenton, FL; as well as several nieces and nephews.
