Calais – William Eugene Townsend, 27, passed away on Friday, May 1, 2009 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA, after a valiant two-year battle with Leukemia. He was born to Vicky Townsend and Wayne Demmons on May 30, 1981. While in high school, Billy became the first Firefighter Explorer for the City of Calais Fire Dept. After graduating from Calais High School in 2000, he followed his dream and became a firefighter with the Lincoln Fire Dept. On June 14, 2003, he married Alicia Mylen. Billy eventually returned home to Calais and recently worked for Richard Mingo Construction. He was a call firefighter for the Calais Fire Dept., a member of the Calais Lion’s Club and attended the Calais Methodist Church. Billy had a love for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, four wheeling, hanging with his friends and most importantly spending time with his family. Billy was predeceased by his mother Vicky, an aunt, grandparents and great-grandparents. Surviving are his loving wife Alicia, who was by his side every step of the way; his daughter, Victoria; his son William; his grandparents that raised him, Martha and Dennis McIntyre; grandfather Gerald Townsend and Vicki; grandparents-in-law, Donna and Bill Mylen; uncles Ricky and Danielle, David and Catherine, and Stephen and Tara; aunts Kim and Billy McVicar, Michelle and Gregg Hornbrook, Pam and Ernest Landry, Nancy and Stephen Lincoln, Susan Pottle, Natalie and Jon Erb, and Sharon and Paul Waycott; his brother Jessie; sister Amber; his father Wayne and Jonelle; step-sister Jessica; a special nephew Wyatt Eugene; sister-in-law Michelle; special cousins David, Melissa, Adam, Sara, Derrick, Nick, Alex, Maddy, Sophie, Jennifer, Darcy and Austin; several other cousins and many special friends too numerous to mention. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, at the Calais United Methodist Church, 849 Main St. in Calais. A celebration of Billy’s life will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with Pastor Karen MacDuff officiating. Burial will follow in Calais Cemetery, after which, the procession will be led to the Calais Fire Dept. where Billy will receive the Firefighter’s Last Call. Following the Firefighter’s Last Call, friends are invited to the Calais American Legion for a gathering. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family.
